A downloadable stream for Windows

! ! ! WARNING ! ! ! READ DESCRIPTION BEFORE PLAYING ! ! !

In Backseater, your goal is to survive as long as possible while guiding multiple streamers at once via their chat boxes, typing in the right option in order to succeed. Run out of time or type in the wrong option, it's over.

*There used to be a browser version of this game available and this description was written with it in mind. It has since been taken down as it was completely broken, caused by a rendering bug with the font. The fixed browser version could not be uploaded before we ran out of time to submit. Please download the game instead.

Video for the jam, because Itch.io didn't feel like adding my screenshots at first and I don't trust it with this either:

The circle button at the bottom of your screen is your inventory.

The phone is your shop. Buy items there.

Every 20 seconds you get a new streamer on your screen on the stream selector.

You will be notified when a streamer requires backseating. Keep an eye on the stream selector screen.

(Press [SHIFT + S] in order to return to the stream selector, and use [LEFT] and [RIGHT] to switch between streams!!)

However...

Sadly, due to failure on time management, the game does not work as intended, and remains rough, unpolished and... Really, really buggy. Despite that, the coders tried really, really hard to get it to work. Even though we all failed on getting the game working on time... They deserve huge credit for all they did. One of em had a perfect sleep schedule and sent it to hell for this!!! Like damn!!!

(Note: While writing this I believed the game was unplayable. It is, you just might not have the best experience.)

It'd be a shame for all the effort to just go unnoticed, so despite the very broken build, it's worth sending in just so maybe people can see the potential for it... Everyone liked working on it, so despite all the issues that came up during development and the build's buggy nature, a full version of this game will be made.

...Uh, eventually, of course.

- - -   Known Issues   - - -

So... A couple known bugs, if you'd like to give it a shot anyway.

  • Certain things cause the game to crash. Sometimes they don't. Maybe in reality we really just made a gambling game...

A couple other things worth pointing out that aren't really bugs...

  • Streamers were intended to talk and say various things during the game. Due to time constraints it had to be scrapped.
  • Not all the music could be implemented. The game's soundtrack is a little larger, but for now there's only one song. The music that ended up not being implemented in this version was made by Msvdds0210/Miyo Music.
  • The placeholder thumbnails weren't replaced. As an apology I polished them myself. heh.
  • Text might sometimes be hard to read (Most noticeable in chat).

And last, a couple things of note!

  • Performing a very popular code in the title screen seems to have very bizarre effects on the game. We have absolutely no idea how that happened as not a single one of the developers has absolutely any memory of ever working, seeing or hearing about anything seen after the fact. Maybe our game is haunted...
  • This game has official Windows 7 support. How cool is that?! ...Huh? You don't care...?
  • Any resemblances to real people are purely coincidental.
  • You cannot pet dogs in this game.

      ...yet.

Install instructions

It's a .zip file, so you won't have much trouble with it!

First, you might wanna make a folder for it. Call it whatever you want and place it wherever you want.

Then, place the .zip file inside. Extract it inside the folder, or else you're gonna be making a complete mess with the game's files. (If you extracted the game outside of its own folder and did, in fact, make a complete mess with the game's files, track down data.win, GameJam.exe and options.ini and delete them, then try again.)

If you use WinRar, you can also use the "Extract in..." feature WinRar has. You can find it on Windows' right click menu.

game is broken in browser on mac

(1 edit) (+3)

Unfortunately due to us trying to catch up with the deadline we couldn't test the game on browser and found out it's broken way too late. For now we recommend downloading the game to try it out. I don't have a Mac myself, but I've heard Wine is available on it, so maybe you could try that? As soon as the jam's over, a fixed browser version will be uploaded. A dedicated Mac build most likely will be made as well, as several team members have a Mac themselves. Sorry for the inconvenience.
